Barnsley College has been awarded the Healthier Futures Barnsley accreditation by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council’s Public Health team.

The College’s Health and Wellbeing Team gathered evidence to meet the criteria of the accreditation and demonstrate that the College is improving the health and wellbeing of the students and staff across all departments.

“The Healthier Futures Barnsley accreditation recognises that we provide a sector-leading, health and wellbeing provision for students throughout the College.”

The certification enhances the Barnsley 2030 strategy, ensuring that the College supports its students to enhance the health and wellbeing of the young people in the region and allow them to enjoy life in good physical and mental health.

Liam Garside, Head of Student Services at the College, said: “The Healthier Futures Barnsley accreditation recognises that we provide a sector-leading, health and wellbeing provision for students throughout the College.

“Through the accreditation, we have demonstrated that we meet the key areas of good physical and mental health and provide a space where young people in the region can thrive in their educational environment.”

The accreditation was developed by the Healthy Learning Healthy Lives team at Doncaster Council with evaluation from Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people across Barnsley.

The four elements of the accreditation are emotional health and wellbeing; physical activity; Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE); and food, drink and oral health; with the college providing evidence of practice in continuous professional development, environment, partnerships, policy and teaching and learning.

Anna Hartley, Executive Director for Public Health and Communities, added: “We want children and young people in Barnsley to enjoy a life of good physical and mental health, thrive in their education and achieve their full potential, whilst feeling connected and supported by their peers and mentors to gain key life skills and experiences which support them in the future.

“I’m so pleased that Barnsley College has worked with us to achieve their accreditation and improve the health and wellbeing of their young people.”
