Like millions on Sunday afternoon, we were glued to our television watching the Lionesses become the national pride, championing victory over Germany in the European Championship.
The game set a record for the highest attendance at either a men’s or a women’s European Championship, and millions of people across the UK tuned in to watch on TV as the final sparked celebrations across the country. Just a small indication at how far the women’s game has come.
“I hope that women and girls in Barnsley feel empowered to get involved in the beautiful game, whether that’s as a player or as a fan.”
We are super proud of our very own Barnsley Sixth Form College Alumni Beth England, who was part of the Lionesses’ team to lift the trophy. A versatile, attack-minded player, Beth joined Chelsea FC ahead of the 2016 season having played a starring role in Doncaster Rovers Belles’ promotion to the FA Women’s Super League in 2015. Beth moved on loan to Liverpool for the 2017/18 season before returning to Chelsea.
Beth England said: “No matter what life throws at you or how isolated you may feel, there is always a choice. Life may knock you down, but choose to get back up and stand up even taller than before.
“It is remarkable the things you can achieve and the legacy you can leave behind. Work for the future you desire, work for that little girl or boy and make their dreams become a reality.”
Mark Ryan, Head of Department for Service Industries at Barnsley College, added: “I hope that women and girls in Barnsley feel empowered to get involved in the beautiful game, whether that’s as a player or as a fan.
“Well done to Beth and her teammates on their fantastic achievements. They played with heart, strength and skill and embodied the very best of sporting spirit.”
