The College’s Travel and Tourism Industry Week has successfully concluded, students were able to listen to industry leaders, experts, and enthusiasts for a week of insightful discussions, networking, and learning.

The week’s main event was a trip to Sky People Training in Manchester, where the students had the opportunity to learn and carry out practical tasks, such as opening and closing aircraft doors, planned emergency landing, how to deal with a smoke-filled cabin and slide descent.

Students experienced a compelling presentation from Ibis Hotel on what it’s like to work within the hospitality sector. The presentation covered the different levels of staff in the hotel and different roles and explained the health and safety that goes into the everyday running of a hotel.

“We had an eventful week filled with inspiring guests. It was a pleasure to host speakers from all industries, offering students valuable insights into various careers within the industry.”

Students additionally had the pleasure of meeting representatives from Jet 2 and Jet 2 holiday, who spoke about their careers to date, the different roles within the travel sector from engineering to cabin crew. They also covered how to get into the competitive sector and how they are becoming more environmentally conscious.

Students also heard from Rob Tierney, an experienced Boeing 787 Dreamliner Senior First Officer at British Airways, who shared his journey in aviation, his role as a pilot and the careers available within the industry. Rob went into detail about the practices he uses, what his role involves, the nature of the work and gave an insight into what decisions pilots make on a day-to-day basis.

Catherine Hirst, Talent United and Enterprise Coordinator at the College and organiser of the week, said: “We had an eventful week filled with inspiring guests. It was a pleasure to host speakers from all industries, offering students valuable insights into various careers within the industry.

“The College remains dedicated to transforming lives and helping students reach their full potential by providing exceptional experiences. I extend my gratitude to all the guest speakers for their time and contributions. I’m already excited about organising more guest speaker sessions and next year’s event.”
