Students’ studies enhanced with a trip stateside

Staff and students from Travel and Tourism and Public Services courses recently visited New York as part of their studies.

The students were taken on a whirlwind sightseeing tour, viewing many cultural sites including Times Square, 9/11 Memorial Freedom Tower, Central Park, Grand Central Terminal and Statue of Liberty.

“New York was amazing, I loved every minute and would definitely do it again. I’m thankful to College to have given me such an incredible experience.”

Students continued their unique link with the Suffolk County Sherriff’s Department by having a tour of the Correctional Facility at Riverhead. The prison, which houses a range of prisoners from New York State and beyond, gives a unique opportunity for students to see how the criminal justice system of the US and the UK differ.

The trip runs every year to allow students to experience different cultures, visit iconic locations and give them the opportunity to gather information and materials that will help with their College projects.

Summer Underwood, a Level 3 Uniformed Protective Services student, said: “New York was amazing, I loved every minute and would definitely do it again. I’m thankful to College to have given me such an incredible experience.”

Thomas Bridges, Head of Department for Sport, Public Services and Travel and Tourism at the College, said: “I’m fortunate enough to have visited this great city several times and I’m still amazed at how it changes and grows each year. The students were a credit to themselves and the College.

“We will get some feedback from the students and use this to plan for next year and, as always, I’d tell any of our students joining the department in September to start saving now as this visit is one not to miss!”
