Students help to raise aspirations at primary school

Students from Catering and Hospitality and Hair and Beauty departments visited Tankersley St Peter’s Primary School as part of our ongoing mission to raise student aspirations. As part of the initiative, the school pupils have been working hard to collect food and toiletries to donate to a good cause.

When the College students arrived, they found that the School had generously gathered a wide array of items to be distributed. The children’s commitment and hard work were evident in the quality and variety of the collected goods.

Kayleigh Bell, a College staff member and Governor at both Barnsley College and the School, said: “I am committed to creating an initiative that fosters collaboration between these two institutions, while also raising aspirations and contributing to our local community.

“The goal is to inspire students and provide them with the opportunity to engage in a meaningful community project that benefits those in need.”

Adding a special touch to the visit, two current Barnsley College students and proud alumni of Tankersley St Peter’s Primary School went along to receive the donations, whilst taking a walk down memory lane. They collected the goods and took the opportunity to speak with the children, sharing their experiences and inspiring the younger generation.

Catering student Phebe Judge-Smith, added: “Being hungry shouldn’t be something anyone has to experience. It has been a pleasure to not only encourage others to do more but also contribute myself. My family has always supported the homeless, and it felt good to do something extra. No one should be hungry.”

Hair and Beauty student Scarlett Pitwell, said: “It was amazing to return to Tankersley St Peter’s Primary School, where I went as a child, and to see the enthusiasm of the young students eager to help. It was not only a great opportunity to reconnect with my old school, but it also brought me closer to the community.”

Once all the donations were collected our students then visited St Mary’s Church to deliver the items so they could be donated to the Barnsley Churches Drop-in Project (BCDP) Rough Sleeper Project where Peter Mulrooney BCDP Treasurer was on hand to receive the items gratefully.

This project is far from over; both College departments have since become involved in a community dinner for the homeless, with plans to expand the engagement further through a pop-up salon in the coming weeks. Pupils from the School will be getting involved along the way too.
