Two Catering and Hospitality students were selected to represent Barnsley College at the recent Nestle Toque d’Or national heats at the Grand Hotel in York.

Tamara Carter and Xoan Gent, who are both studying Level 3 Professional Cookery, had to first submit an online entry, developing a sustainable dish from the competition brief. They were then chosen by Nestle along with 22 other students from different colleges around the country to compete in York.

The first of two heats required the students to watch and then replicate a masterclass held by one of the judges.

They then had to produce a dessert of their own, using the different Nestle products. Tamara made a Rolo, caramel and toffee dessert while Xoan made a KitKat cheesecake with ruby tempered chocolate.

To finish the competition there was an individual question session with the judges where the focus was on food sustainability.

Tamara said: “It has been a fabulous experience competing, I was a little nervous at first but once we started cooking, I was fine.

“It’s great to compete with other students from around the country and have an experience such as this”.
