Our Travel and Tourism student, Luke Scruby, is on track to achieve his dream of competing in the British GT Championship.

Luke took up racing aged six after watching British Touring Car Championship on the television and having his first race at his local go-karting track. In 2022 he swapped the kart for a car and competed in the Junior Saloon Car Championship, the largest junior driver grid and is officially the most supported Junior Championship in the world, where he kept a steady flow of points.

“The Barnsley Sports Academy has helped me with funding, which is a massive part in racing, and has helped me get a new race suit. It has also introduced me into people who are like minded, who I am able to give tips to and help them develop their career in motorsport.”

He currently holds an international race license and regularly trains for races, which includes sim time to learn new tracks, and to familiarise himself on what to expect. He also has access to a driver coach, who helps him during race weekends to maximise his understanding of the perfect racing line, braking points and apex’s.

Luke is part of the Barnsley Sports Academy within College and works on his strength with the coaching staff. This has enabled him to access an Elite Sports Performance Bursary to fund aspects of his competition such as equipment and travel.

Luke, a Level 3 Travel and Tourism student, said: “My greatest sporting achievement is finishing in the top 10 in my first senior race, battling with drivers who have more years racing experience than I’ve been alive! In the future, I hope to race in the British Touring Car Championship, which is a great feeder series for world endurance championships.
