Our Art and Design students are showcasing their ‘Up Our Street’ exhibition at the Cooper Gallery until Saturday 13 May.
The exhibition is a collection of print-based works produced by Level 3 Art and Design diploma students in response to a ‘People and Places’ theme, which explores locations either in Barnsley or cities around the world.
“Creating the print was a really rewarding process, as I faced challenges along the way but overcame these to produce a piece of work that has been well received. I was in shock when I found out the print had been selected for display in the Cooper Gallery and even more so when I learned a member of the public had bought a copy.”
The work on display features limited-edition contemporary prints using lino cut, wood cut, mono-print, etching, screen print and collagraph.
Liz Leek, Deputy Principal Culture, Place and Communities, visited the exhibition and selected four prints for display across College sites. Raul Digpal’s digital wood cut was chosen for the Principal’s office and Sydney Gibson (lino print), Maddison Jonas (lino print) and Libby Strachan (digital print) also had their work selected. All the student work on display is available for purchase.
Sydney said: “I based my lino print on a photograph that I took on my mobile phone of a real-life marriage proposal. When we received the brief for the exhibition, I immediately had the idea to base my print upon the photo, capturing the location for such a unique moment.

“It is really valuable for us as College students to be able to get involved in activities such as the exhibition. I have gained so much confidence from having this opportunity.”
Visit the Cooper Gallery to view the ‘Up Our Street’ collection of print works between 10.00am and 4.00pm from Monday to Saturday until Saturday 13 May, apart from bank holidays.
