Our Sports student, Calum Smith has turned his sporting hobby into a business, with the support of Barnsley College Business Centre.

Calum has always had a keen interest in the sport and the footballing industry and decided to study Coaching, Physical Education and Sports Development Foundation Degree at the University Centre to further his knowledge and skills within the sector. Whilst doing the course, he decided to take his love for sport even further and launch his own business, SWS Football Organisation, in partnership with former Barnsley College Sport student, Ryan Smith.

SWS Football Organisation has worked with over 30 primary schools and has helped children aged between 4 and 12 to improve their football skills. The business has worked with various professional footballers including Mansfield Town footballer, Cody Collins, as well as Chelsea, England and former Barnsley College student, Lucy Watson.

The business has recently moved into Barnsley College Business Centre, where they will have access to office space but also to tailored business support and guidance from representatives at the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce.

Calum said: “When Ryan contacted me to see if this was an opportunity I could be a part of and I jumped at the chance.

“I have developed many skills by owning my own business, from time keeping to tax and finance. The course has helped massively; the tutors support and knowledge has improved my coaching and understanding of the importance of physical education, which I’ve transferred into my own coaching sessions.

“We are looking to expand into other sports. Having an office in Barnsley College Business Centre has enabled us to recruit a marketing specialist and given us a space to make it our own.”

Lliam Dickinson, Sport Higher Education Pathway Leader at Barnsley College University Centre, added: “Calum has always been a determined and hardworking student, keen to pursue a career within sport. Calum has a logical and positive approach to his life and studies.

“Congratulations Calum on starting up your own business, you are an inspiration to your tutors and peers. I wish you every success for the future.”
