How do you become an apprentice?

To become an apprentice, you need to:

  • Be aged 16 or above, and have left school
  • Be currently living in England
  • Meet the entry requirements for the apprenticeship
  • Be employed in that job role already or find an employer who is recruiting an apprentice in the industry you want to work in

Important information for School Leavers

You can apply to College to be approved for an apprenticeship programme when you are in Year 11. It’s the same process as applying for a full time course. Although you can register and search for vacancies on the Find An Apprenticeship website, remember, you won’t be able to apply for any vacancies which are due to start before the last Friday in June or before your 16th birthday

You are not allowed to start an apprenticeship until after the last Friday in June when you are 16 years old and have finished Year 11.

A step by step guide to applying for an apprenticeship

Step 1: Search

Take a look at our Apprenticeship Department page or the Find An Apprenticeship website to see all our available apprenticeships.

Step 2: Apply

To apply for a specific apprenticeship job vacancy, go to our Apprenticeship vacancies page. This lists all the current apprenticeship vacancies we have and you can apply online for your chosen job. This page is updated on a weekly basis, so remember to keep checking back for any new jobs that might have been posted.

Step 3: Approval Session

You will be invited to attend an online approval session with an assessor. We will need to see proof of your qualifications and a copy of your CV, if you haven’t already submitted it to us, please email it to apprenticeships@barnsley.ac.uk. If you need help with your CV take a look at our tips for writing a good CV page, or pop into our Job Shop at Old Mill Lane for advice on CV writing.

It’s really important you attend this session as your application will not be put forward for any apprenticeship jobs without attending it. Please call our Apprenticeship Team on 01226 216 106 if you need to rearrange your appointment.

Step 4: Interview Shortlisting

We will send your CV to the employer who will choose the candidates they wish to interview.

Step 5: Employer Interview

If you are selected, you will be invited to attend an interview with the employer. Be prepared! If you’re unsuccessful, don’t worry because you have gained valuable experience. Simply start your search again. You can take a look at our interview tips to help you prepare.

Step 6: Induction

If you are offered the job, we will contact you and arrange for you to complete your induction and meet your assessor.

Step 7: Start your Apprenticeship!

You can start an apprenticeship at any time during the year.
