Jersey Calves Milk New Possibilities for Agriculture Students

We have boosted our agricultural education programme with the gracious contribution of two Jersey calves.

The donation, from Tyers Hall Farm part of the the Longley Farm dairy business, exemplifies the dedication and commitment to supporting education and empowering students with real-world skills and hands-on experience in animal husbandry.

The Jersey cows, known for their high milk production and docile nature, will play a pivotal role in enriching the learning experience for students studying agriculture at the Wigfield Farm campus.

The cows will create an immersive learning environment. Students will participate in hands-on activities such as feeding and general care. As the dairy cows mature, future cohorts will acquire practical skills like milking and understanding the breading programme to produce large quantities of milk.

Peter Wood, Head of Department for Landbased Industries, said: “The Jersey calves are a real asset to the farm, and I want to thank Tyers Hall Farm for their support. The donation aligns perfectly with our mission to provide students with the experience they will need to be work-ready for the agricultural industry.”

In addition to the educational benefits, the College sees this donation as an opportunity to strengthen its ties with the local community. The College plans to involve local farmers and experts in the agricultural industry to collaborate further to enhance students learning.

Paul Robson, Manager of Tyers Hall Farm, added “We are hoping the new additions will help encourage people to come into farming – which is a good industry if you’re the right sort of person. There’s a real gap between education and the reality of working on a farm and by doing this, we’re hoping to help bridge the gap in a way and it will be the start of a long collaboration between us and the College.”
