Health, Science and Social Care Professions students have experienced eye-opening sessions from industry experts as part of their industry week.

With over 40 sessions, organised by our Enterprise Team, students had the opportunity to attend talks, workshops, and practical sessions from various people and organisations within the Health, Science and Social Care industry to allow them to raise aspirations with a wide variety of careers available within the industry.

NHS South Yorkshire paid a visit to talk about all things paramedic related. The unscripted talk allowed students to ask their burning questions about the everyday expectations of being a paramedic. This experience provided students the opportunity to understand the role in more detail, including the different routes they can take to become a paramedic and the entry requirements.

Hannah Jones, Education and Outreach Officer at Thackray Museum of Medicine, spoke to Applied Science students about the major themes and developments in medicine that have changed the course of medical history. Students used medical objects and historical sources to consider events that changed medicine and how people in the future might view us. Students also learned not to look at the medical process as a straight line, highlighting the Bradford Lozenge and Thalidomide scandal show.

Students also learned about careers within the various foster care houses across Yorkshire and the world of social work thanks to Angie Curry, as well as careers within Beacon South Yorkshire, which provides a range of services supporting carers across South Yorkshire who are caring for people with substance misuse, disabilities, mental health, dementia, or who are elderly.

Other sessions during the week, included cost of living workshops; Therapy Huskies; a virtual talk with The Deep; transferable skills for the workplace with Abbeydale Training; workshops with medical education company Meducators; Wathwood Hospital; NHS Occupational Therapist Marcus Dearns; Midwife Leah Thompson and District Nurse Julie Allott.
