Health and Social Care Students Master First Aid for Placements

Our Level 3 Health and Social Care students recently had the chance to take part in hands-on first aid training with expert trainers from Crossroads (Barnsley) Ltd. The sessions taught them life-saving skills such as CPR, wound care and how to handle emergencies.

This training didn’t just give them practical skills—it also boosted their confidence and prepared them for upcoming work placements in care homes, hospitals and community healthcare teams.

“Having this training is so valuable for the future, especially since the certificate lasts for three years. Now, if anyone ever needs first aid, I’ll know what to do.”

Having these first aid skills means our students can step up in emergencies, showing they’re ready to take on responsibility and proving they have what it takes for future careers in health and social care.

First aid isn’t just a skill—it’s a way to make a real difference in someone’s life, especially in high-pressure moments. Our students are now better equipped to handle whatever challenges come their way.

Jessica Fraser, one of the students who took part in the first of two sessions hosted by the College and Crossroads (Barnsley) Ltd, shared her experience.

She said: “I found the sessions useful because they covered both the practical and theoretical sides of first aid. We didn’t just learn how to do it—we also learned why it’s important and how to apply it in real situations.

“Having this training is so valuable for the future, especially since the certificate lasts for three years. Now, if anyone ever needs first aid, I’ll know what to do. The sessions also helped us understand different scenarios where first aid might be needed and how to handle them effectively to help the patient.”

Susan Taylor, Chair of the Board of Trustees for Crossroads (Barnsley) Ltd, added: “Emergency first aid training is a lifesaving skill that applies to everyone, and by introducing the subject at an early age, it can have a significant impact on the way a responder can react confidently in emergencies.

“Working in the care sector requires a skilled workforce to deal with unforeseen emergencies, and therefore having qualified first aiders on site can be an immediate lifeline.

“The students were thoroughly engaged, especially in the practical element of the course; they were observed and assessed as they individually performed CPR on the mannequin  and placed their patient in the recovery position to meet the National Occupational Standards. All students successfully achieved the required pass mark to be awarded certification.”
