Games Design students achieve high score at WorldSkills UK

Level 3 Games Development students Andrew Cooper, Frankylen Beckham and Harriett Banham worked together to create their winning game ‘Crash Out’, coming up against 27 other teams from colleges across the UK.

The competition took place from 21-25 October with teams being challenged to design and develop a high-quality game, implementing key features such as movement and speed.

The final games were scored against design, visuals and engagement, with the Barnsley College team earning top marks across all three criteria, gaining an overall score of 45 points to secure their victory.

Winning team member, Andrew Cooper, shared his joy: “This was a unique and exciting experience for us. We’ve done many Game Jams before but facing against other colleges and winning was exhilarating. We’re very thankful for the opportunity to participate”.

Games Design teacher, Jordan Folegnani-Levitt praised the experience, stating: “The WorldSkills UK Games Jam has been a fantastic experience for the Games Design students here at Barnsley College. It has given them the opportunity to think outside of the box and work on briefs set by professionals from within the industry.

“Projects such as this give a valuable insight into industry standard processes and workflows, allow students to gain industry feedback and enrich their overall student experience.”
