Student Services Money Management

Student Services Money Management:

There are a variety of ways in which Student Services can support learners with budgeting and funding. Please see the below for more information.

Student Services in Partnership with Virgin Money

Student Services have partnered with Virgin Money to bring students the best advice and any referrals that they may need in order to budget efficiently and effectively. They can support us with:

  • Referrals to open a bank account, for students who don’t have one yet
  • Money management tutorials, that can be arranged with course tutors and Student Services
  • Advice regarding topics such as fraud, credit ratings, loans/overdrafts, saving for the future, budgeting and managing money

Student Services Run Tutorials:

Student Services also run a wide range of tutorials for all departments across college. These can all be arranged via course tutors. The tutorials include:

  • Introduction to Budgeting – A tutorial that allows students to learn the budgeting basics, how to create their own budget, and how to separate essential from non-essential costs
  • Introduction to Banking – A tutorial that demonstrates the variety of bank accounts available and teaches students how to read a bank statement properly
  • Debit/Credit Cards – A tutorial to show the differences between debit and credit cards, and the positives and negatives of each one
  • Types of Savings Account – A tutorial to show students the variety of accounts available, introducing them to what an interest rate is and how they work
  • Financial Wellbeing – A tutorial to promote the importance of good financial wellbeing, looking at a case study of how poor mental wellbeing can affect your finances and vice versa
  • Digital Currencies – A tutorial to develop an understanding of cryptocurrencies and some of the dangers of investing in them
  • Gambling Awareness – A tutorial to demonstrate the dangers of gambling addictions and promote setting limitations to avoid losing money

Other Services

As well as the above, we also have a wide range of literature available in Student Services, on the ground floor of our Old Mill Lane campus, for students to take away and read themselves. We also have staff on hand in Student Services to speak to students who are struggling and offer them extra support where possible.

If you require any extra support on this topic, please email us on studentsupport@barnsley.ac.uk or call us on 01226 216267.
