Fashion Students Help Raise Funds for Barnsley Hospice with Sustainable Designs

Fashion students create sustainable designs for Barnsley Hospice

Fashion students have created garments to be sold to raise money for Barnsley Hospice. Barnsley Hospice Retail Hub commissioned the Level 3 Fashion students to transform second-hand denim and other waste fabrics into stunning, contemporary outfits. The outfits needed to take inspiration from either their hometown or the human body.

The students visited the Retail Hubs warehouse to choose up to five pieces of denim, along with other garments and waste fabrics to rework into their own designs.

The project challenged students to be creative with the second-hand clothing and wasted fabric, transforming unloved items into cherished ones through innovative ideas and experimenting with the fabrics.

The Fashion students worked with the Level 3 Digital Photography students to produce images and video content to use in the promotional material for their designs.

The students then presented their incredible designs to Lewis, from Barnsley Hospice Retail Hub, showcasing the reworked items and explaining the concepts behind the designs.

Fashion Tutor, Amy Basry stated: “The Barnsley Hospice project is a highly valued annual collaboration for our Fashion students. As a second-year project, it challenges the students to enhance their skill set while working to a creative brief and strict deadlines.

“This experience connects them with industry professionals, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in the creative sector. Partnering with Barnsley Hospice is especially meaningful, as it supports an incredible charity while allowing students to develop their technical abilities, fulfil academic criteria, and gain real-world experience.”

The charity provides specialist compassionate care to hundreds of local people every year from all over Barnsley who have life-limiting illnesses. The final garments will then be auctioned off to raise money for the Hospice and support their incredible work in the community.

The College’s partnership with Barnsley Hospice has gone from strength to strength, with the charity working with various departments across the College to set briefs for students. As well as the Retail Hub running regular pop-up events within the Students’ Union selling second-hand clothing.

Lewis Gelder, E-Retail and Events Manager at Barnsley Hospice Retail Hub said about the partnership: “The collaboration between Barnsley College and Barnsley Hospice has been a huge success over the past 2 years.

We’ve raised well over £5,000 for Barnsley Hospice over that time and we have kitted out hundreds of students and staff members with awesome pre-loved gems! This collaboration helps us raise awareness about the work we do and further extends our presence across the town.”
