Start Date / Duration

This course commences in September 2025 and will be completed in one year.

Entry requirements

A keen interest and willingness to be involved within the Esports industry.
Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English and Maths.
You will be required to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) check along with initial assessments in English and Maths.

If you don’t currently meet these entry requirements, you may be able to study a Level 1 Foundation Learning course.

You will achieve

Award in Esports Industry Knowledge.
GCSE Maths and English.
The opportunity to progress onto the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Esports in Year 2 and Year 3 (equivalent to three A levels – allowing progression to University).

Course overview

Esports or competitive video gaming is a growing industry. Our one-year full-time course covers everything you need to get started, including coaching, events, and personal development. You’ll improve skills like teamwork, communication, and decision-making. With access to our Esports Arena and state-of-the-art facilities, you’ll be ready to compete in no time. Join our Esports Academy and take part in the British Esports Association Championships. Jumpstart your career in Esports today!

Assessment will occur continually throughout the programme. You will have unit assignments to complete and will be assessed on your practical ability and application of theory. You will have time-constrained assessments, written assignments, oral presentations, professional discussions and group work. Each individual unit and the full award are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

During practical sessions, kit will consist of an Esports Programme t-shirt along with formal wear appropriate to the Esports business industry. Non-regulation clothing and footwear is not permitted. Students are recommended to bring their own devices such as keyboard, mouse and/or controller, but this is not essential.

Barnsley Esports Academy clothing can be purchased from the Honeywell Sport Centre.

On completion of this programme, you could apply for our Level 3 courses within the Esport, Sport, Business and Leisure industries. Alternatively, students will have gained a range of skills throughout the programme that are recognised by employers and may wish to pursue immediate careers with employers or apprenticeship providers.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.

If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
