Public Services: Uniformed Protective Services Level 2 Full-time

This course will start in September 2025 and will take one year to complete.

Entry requirements

You will require:

  • Two GCSEs at grade 4 or above including GCSE English at grade 3 or above, or NVQ Level 1 or equivalent qualifications.
  • A good school/college report.
  • Alternatively, you may have successfully completed the Preparation for Public Services course.
  • In addition, you will also be required to complete a favourable interview.

If you do not currently meet these entry requirements, you may be able to study a Level 1 Foundation Learning course.

Course overview

This course equips students with essential skills for careers in uniformed protective services. Learn about careers, fitness, teamwork, leadership, policing and incident investigation through lectures, practical activities, guest speakers and visits to services like the Armed Forces and emergency services.

Course highlights:

  • Outdoor Activities and Navigation

Assessment will occur continually throughout the programme. You will have unit assignments to complete and will be assessed on your group and individual work. You will also have time-constrained assignments, as well as oral presentations. Each individual unit and the full award are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level. Assessments will reflect those used in the Public Services.

All Public Services students will be expected to wear a Barnsley Sports Academy (BSA) hooded top* and polo shirt*, along with dark tracksuit bottoms and sports trainers. During practical sessions, kit will consist of a Barnsley Sports Academy t-shirt*, dark shorts and sports trainers. Non-regulation clothing/footwear is not permitted. Students will also require ring-binders, writing materials, paper/stationery and core textbooks.

Public Services students will also require outdoor activity clothing, such as walking boots and waterproof clothing.

This qualification is designed to offer you the opportunity to develop your academic skills, knowledge and understanding that will prepare, once you have successfully completed the course, to progress onto the two Level 3 programmes ran by us.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.

If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
