Public Services: Military Preparation Course Level 2 Full-time

Start Date / Duration

This course starts in September 2025 and runs for one year. Alternatively we also offer an intense six month course suitable for individuals already working through their application process.

Entry requirements

You will require the following:

  • Academic entry requirements will be subject to chosen career preferences and good level of self-discipline.
  • You will also be required to complete a favourable interview.
  • In addition, you should have a good general standard of health which meets the requirements for your chosen Armed Forces. If you are unsure about the health requirements, please contact your nearest Armed Forces Careers Office or check their websites.

If you don’t currently meet these entry requirements, you maybe able to study a Level 1 Foundation Learning course.

You will achieve

Level 2 Preparation to Uniformed Armed Forces (Barnsley College Qualification).

Course overview

This course is designed for those aiming for a career in the armed forces. You’ll gain skills in map reading, navigation, leadership and fitness. The course includes practical activities and outdoor trips, like visits to the Army and RAF. You will receive guidance on recruitment and selection.

Assessment will occur continually throughout the programme. You will have unit assignments to complete and will be assessed on your group and individual work. You will also have time-constrained assignments, as well as oral presentations. Each individual unit and the full award are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level. Assessments will reflect those used in the Public Services.

All Public Services students will be expected to wear a Barnsley Sports Academy (BSA) hooded top* and polo shirt*, along with dark tracksuit bottoms and sports trainers. During practical sessions, kit will consist of a Barnsley Sports Academy t-shirt*, dark shorts and sports trainers. Non-regulation clothing/footwear is not permitted. Students will also require ring-binders, writing materials, paper/stationery and core textbooks.

Public Services students will also require outdoor activity clothing, such as walking boots and waterproof clothing.

This qualification is designed to offer you the opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge and understanding that will prepare, once you have successfully completed the course, to progress onto a career in the armed forces or further develop your skillset by progressing on to another one of our public service opportunities.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.

If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
