Course overview

This course will give you the skills you need to work in a salon or become a self-employed Nail Technician. 

The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills as a Nail Technician.

Nail Technicians help people look after and improve the general health, care and appearance of their nails. Typically, they are found working within beauty salons or nail bars. However, many Nail Technicians also work on a self-employed basis, travelling to client’s houses to perform a range of treatments.

This study programme offers you the employability skills required to work as a professional Nail Technician. You will gain advanced specialist training in nail techniques and develop good communication and interpersonal skills.

Course content

Course themes:

  • Enhancing and maintaining nails using UV gel, liquid and powder 
  • Finishing overlays using electric files
  • Creating and applying nail art
  • Business practice
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Chemistry of nail products
  • Enhancing nails using electrical files

There will be continuous assessment of practical work, both on and off the job, oral questions relating to practical work and written questions. You will also be required to maintain and submit a portfolio of evidence of work produced. Assessments are based on the ability to do the job.

You will be required to purchase a uniform, nail kit, manicure kit and text book. All kits are compulsory to attend and achieve the qualification. Further information will be provided at the interview.

How much does the course cost?

This course is free for 16-18 year old learners.

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.

If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
