Entry requirements

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above  including GCSE English and Maths
  • You will need to have a competent standard of musicianship on an instrument or vocals
  • You will be required to demonstrate your musical skills at interview

Course overview

This exciting course develops your understanding of the broad subject of music, whilst also preparing you for university-level study. You will explore music performance, composition, music theory and harmony, live sound, the music industry, improvisation and music technology. You will take part in a number of public performances. This is a 2 year course, after which you will achieve an Extended Diploma in Music Level 3. This is awarded by UAL and is the equivalent of three A levels.

Course content

You will study all areas of music including music performance techniques and session styles plus improving your listening skills and sound recording techniques. You will look at music theory, the music freelance world plus modern and pop music in practice. There are many opportunities for public performances, playing large and small venues, representing the College at national competitions. Other units will include areas such as:

  • Live performance
  • Music Industry
  • Events and promotion
  • Composing music
  • Studio recording
  • Music sequencing

You will be assessed on your practical work and coursework.

 

Your own instrument is essential and the ability to play it to a good level.

 

  • Employment: former students have gained employment at The Music Factory Entertainment Group, as touring musicians, solo artists at the Palladium Theatre in London, session players, instrumental teachers and school music teachers.
  • Education: you could choose to develop your skills further at university progressing onto a range of courses.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about Further Education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.

If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
