Landscape/Horticulture Supervisor Level 3 Apprenticeship

You can start an Apprenticeship at any time. This course runs for three years/ 1month. (maximum average duration).

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for the course:
• Qualifications related to the course – Level 2 Standard Apprenticeship in Horticulture / Landscape Operative
• GCSE A* – C or equivalent requirements and / or Functional Skills L2 Functional Skills passes in English and Maths
• Other requirements e.g. Disclosure Barring Service (DBS).

You will achieve

Landscape/Horticulture Supervisor Level 3
Apprenticeship Standard at either Pass, Merit or Distinction

Level 2 Award in the Safe Application of Pesticides using Pedestrian Hand Held Equipment (required for the application of chemical controls for vegetation control and plant health treatments)

Emergency First Aid Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work.

Course overview

Horticulture and Landscape Supervisors can be employed to oversee work in public parks and gardens, green spaces and historic gardens, private gardens and estates or in production nurseries and retail outlets. Many businesses will be specialised in their activities; such as grounds maintenance (soft-landscape) or landscape construction (hard-landscape).

Course content

You will cover either the Horticulture or Hard Landscape routes including business, communication, customer care and supervision, plant identification, health and safety and Protection of biodiversity and heritage amongst other key course areas.

Core skills – You will learn:

  • Business
  • Supervise a project including project processes
  • Planning and specification
  • Proactively solve practical problems by using experience and judgement to make decisions
  • Be adaptable to different priorities, environments, conditions and technologies
  • Communication; facilitating effective communication with others, including clients, the public and colleagues, this will require IT systems use

Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths must achieve this prior to taking the end point assessment.

The apprentice should produce a portfolio of evidence on-programme. The portfolio should contain
employer appraisals, apprentice journal plus the mandatory qualifications.
The end point assessment will have the following elements:
• A synoptic practical assessment containing a range of practical activities
• Professional discussion
• On line knowledge assessment meeting the knowledge requirements of the standard
• Supervisory Studies Project

You will require a pen, note paper, safety boots, gloves, pencil and a ruler.

You will study within the workplace and attend classes at Barnsley College,
Wigfield Centre for Land Based Studies, Haverlands Lane, Worsborough, Barnsley, South Yorkshire S70 5NQ

Progression options e.g. employment – Horticulture Team Leader, Landscape Supervisor, Assistant Head Gardener. Further study Higher National Diploma in Horticulture or Landscaping or undergraduate degree in Horticulture.

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
