Healthcare Assistant Practitioner Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship

Start Date / Duration

Whilst you may start an apprenticeship at any time, this course will have multiple start dates. Please contact us for more information. The apprenticeship will take two years to complete.

Entry requirements

You must be employed in a healthcare setting for at least 30 hours per week and your employer must cover the cost of this course.

To study a Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship you must also meet the following entry requirements:

48 UCAS points from one of the following:

  • Access to HE Diploma from a QAA recognised Access to HE course
  • A Levels, AS Levels, CACHE qualifications, BTEC Diplomas and other Level 3 qualifications will be considered with related work experience

Plus

  • Normally GCSE English Language or English Literature and mathematics at grade C or above or equivalents (please see below)

Course overview

This course prepares Assistant Practitioners to deliver high-quality, compassionate care as part of the health and social care team. Designed for band 1 and 2 workers looking to progress into band 3 and 4 roles, it develops essential skills for patient care across primary and secondary settings. Offered as a Higher Apprenticeship by Sheffield Hallam University, it enables those in assistant roles to achieve both the Higher Apprenticeship and a Foundation Degree HTQ, supporting career advancement.

COURSE CONTENT

Year 1:

  • Work-based learning- practice portfolio (20 Credits)
  • Work-based learning- academic (20 Credits)
  • Transition to Higher Education (20 Credits)
  • Essential sciences for person centred care (40 Credits)
  • Integrated holistic assessment and delivery of health and social care interventions (20 Credits)

Year 2:

  • Work based learning-academic (20 Credits)
  • Work-based learning-practice portfolio (20 Credits)
  • Promoting health, wellbeing and independence (40 Credits)
  • Using and evaluating evidence to inform practice (20 Credits)
  • Leadership and management. (20 Credits)

Note: At the end of your academic learning, to gain your apprenticeship, you will need to complete something called an End-Point Assessment (EPA). This assessment includes a professional discussion and workplace observation. During your course you will be prepared for this.

Each module includes one or two assignments assessed through essays or presentations, along with ongoing work-based assessments through observations and documented practice hours.

  • You will need writing materials, paper, pens and folders.
  • You will need access to a computer/laptop/tablet to complete and upload work.

There are several opportunities available to you, depending on the path you take.

Sheffield Hallum university offer a direct entry to the degree course which is relevant to you. For example, Radiography, Midwifery, Nursing, Physiotherapy and Paramedic Science. You will leave the course with the relevant skills and knowledge to join in the second year of the degree course.

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.
