Make your ideas become a reality and create the games and visual effects that you would love to see and play.
This course is the ideal first step for those who wish to work in the computer games (design or development), digital animation, or VFX industries. Throughout the course you will develop industry focused skills in Computer Game Design, Character Design, Game Engines, 3D Modelling, 3D Animation, VFX, Video Editing, and Sound Design.
You will also gain experience in using Virtual Reality and motion capture. The aim of the course is to prepare you for progression to a Level 3 course in Computer Games, Digital Design, Film and TV, or Computing.
This study programme encourages you to explore and develop your creative and technical skills, and knowledge. You will gain an understanding of how the Computer Games, Animation and VFX industries operate, and the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to work within these exciting, rapidly growing, industries.
You will learn how to plan productions and then get hands on using industry standard software and equipment to produce original game levels, original game art, animations, original audio, videos and VFX. You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively in production teams, to create original products. You will develop digital design and production skills using industry standard software packages including Adobe Photoshop, 3DS Max / Maya, After Effects, Unreal Engine / Unity and more.

Students who successfully complete the Level 2 Games, Animation & VFX course, as well as a grade 4 or above in English and maths, could then progress onto our Level 3 courses in Computer Games, Digital Design, Film and TV, or Computing.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.
If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.
If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
