GCSE English and Maths at grade 5 or above and three other GCSEs at grade 4 or above.

Course overview

The Events and Venues Technician T Level will teach you the skills and knowledge needed for a career in live events. Developed in collaboration with businesses to meet industry needs, on this course you will learn:

  • Planning and managing events at a range of venues
  • Technical requirements, including the use of various sound and lighting equipment
  • Stage operations and running live productions
  • Health and safety requirements

Course content

You will develop an understanding of a broad range of issues relevant to the sector including:

  • The creative economy
  • The individual in the creative industries
  • Cultural context and vocabulary
  • Audience and consumer needs
  • Legal and regulatory requirements
  • Professional standards and conduct in the workplace
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion requirements
  • Research skills
  • Project methodology and administration
  • Continued professional development

You will be assessed via coursework and examinations.

You will also complete an employer-set project to assess the core knowledge learnt during the first year of the programme, including demonstrating all stages of the production process.

You will require a basic PPE kit. Your tutor will advise you how to get this.

The course will give you a route into a variety of careers within the sector including:

  • Studio sound engineer
  • Audio visual technician
  • Live sound engineer
  • Stagehand
  • Lighting technician
  • Broadcast engineer

Alternatively, you could undertake further study including Higher Technical Qualifications, Higher or degree-level apprenticeships or a university-level course.

How much does the course cost?

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.

If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
