Entry requirements

You should hold:

  • a Level 3 qualification – e.g a BTEC or T-Level in a relevant subject area, such as Engineering, Construction or Computing, or A-Levels
  • GCSE English and Maths at a grade 4/C or above

Alternatively if you have significant work experience and GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above, you will be considered.

Course overview

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are new Level 4 and 5 qualifications that have been developed by awarding bodies in collaboration with employers, so you’ll get the right training, knowledge and skills to succeed in the workplace. The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering for England is offered on either a full-time or part-time basis, allowing you to study a range of core and specialist units to help you progress within Engineering.

This course is delivered as part of the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology (SYIoT).

Course content

The Higher National Certificate in Engineering for England provides a solid grounding for those wanting to develop their skills and knowledge through practical study.

You will study a mixture of core mandatory and specialist units  which meet the requirements of Occupational Standards in order to develop the abilities and confidence needed to lead, manage and respond to a range of complex engineering situations.

  • Core Mandatory Unit 4001: Engineering Design
  • Core Mandatory Unit 4002: Engineering Maths
  • Core Mandatory Unit 4004: Managing a Professional Engineering Project (Pearson-set)
  • Specialist Mandatory Unit 4006: Mechatronics
  • Specialist Mandatory Unit 4008: Mechanical Principles
  • Specialist Mandatory Unit 4014: Production Engineering for Manufacture
  • Specialist Mandatory Unit 4017: Quality and Process Improvement
  • Specialist Mandatory Unit 4020: Digital Principles

Upon completion you may wish to progress on to the Higher National Diploma, other higher education courses, or continue through employment. You can also study individual units through the HN Flex pathway, which offers short, bite-sized qualifications.

There will be a range of assessment methods used through practical application, which may include practical sessions, essays, reports, presentations and projects.

You can continue studying the Higher Technical Qualification by completing the Higher National Diploma, launching in September 2025. Alternatively, you could study individual HN Flex units and other higher education courses. On completion you will also be able to use your skills and knowledge in work.

How much does the course cost?

This course costs £5995.

We offer a service to any  student who has a diagnosis of anything persistent or long-term which might interfere with how they study and manage their day-to- day academic engagement. The service is flexible and shaped around the needs of each individual; it might be consistent support or intermittent support.

Students with children or dependant adults may qualify for a Childcare Grant or Adult Dependants’ Grant. Students can apply for these at the same time as applying for a Maintenance Loan.

Remember: Eligible students will not have to pay tuition fees in advance and can apply for the Maintenance Loan before they start the course.
