Engineering EAL Certificate Level 1 Full-Time

Start Date / Duration

This course will start in September 2024. The course will run for 1 academic year.

Entry requirements

You must be 16 to 18 years of age (or 19 to 25 with an Education, Health and Care plan).

You must hold GCSE English and Maths. One of these qualifications must be a minimum Grade 1 and the other must be a minimum Grade 2.

EAL Level 1 Certificate in Engineering Technologies.

Course overview

This qualification has been specifically designed to offer progression into the EAL Level 2 Certificate and Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Technologies. It gives learners a broad introduction to the practices and processes of engineering technology. It covers basic knowledge, understanding and skills that are relevant to a wide variety of careers and study routes and takes a hands-on approach to basic engineering training by providing learners with:

  • Experience and understanding of a range of potential careers in the engineering sector
  • Information that will help them make more informed decisions about their post-16 options
  • Personal skills to help them work effectively and achieve their potential
  • Transferable skills and skills that are not widely advanced through the traditional academic curriculum, which are applicable to a wide variety of contexts and learning objectives.

Course content

To successfully achieve this qualification, student with need to complete the following units.

  • Unit 1 Introduction to Working in Engineering
  • Unit 2 Introduction to Machining Engineering Materials
  • Unit 6 Introduction to Electrical Installation
  • Unit 9 Introduction to Motorcycle Maintenance
  • Unit 13 Introduction to Basic Maths and Science used in Engineering

Assessment methods within this qualification include Centre marked practical and theory assessments for all units.

Assessment methods have been designed to assess the knowledge, understanding and skills of learners for each unit.

Health and Safety equipment will need to be worn in workshops.

Successful achievement of this qualification will enable students to progress to the next level in the subject sectors of engineering, motor vehicle or electrical installation.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.

If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
