This study programme starts in September and lasts for one year.

Entry requirements

Preferably four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and Maths, or a level 1 in Engineering or Electrical Installation.

Students should be aged 16-18 years old.  For those that are age 19 or above they will need to consider the part time course when available.

If you do not meet these entry requirements then the Engineering Level 1 course may suit you.

Course overview

If you’re curious about becoming an electrician, this course is perfect for you! Electricians work on wiring and electrical circuits in homes and businesses, ensuring equipment and machinery run smoothly. This course will give you essential skills and knowledge to start your career. You’ll learn about electrical installation design, environmental tech systems, electrical science, and more. Organised and safety-conscious individuals will thrive in this exciting, hands-on profession.

The assessment involves practical assessments and assignments.

You will need suitable overalls and protective footwear which can be purchased through the College on enrolment. You will also need pen, paper and a folder to organise your work.

After completion of this course you can progress onto our Electrical Installation Level 3, or alternatively you might wish to start an apprenticeship.

How much does the course cost?

If you are aged 16-18, this course is free.

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about Further Education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.

If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
