Bricklaying Level 1 Diploma Full-time

This course will commence in September 2024 and will take one year to complete.

Entry requirements

  • You must be 16-18 year olds.
  • You must hold GCSE English and Maths. One of these qualifications must be a minimum Grade 1 and the other must be a minimum Grade 2.

Level 1 Brickwork Diploma.

Course overview

Enrol to this course to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in Bricklaying.

You will start to develop the knowledge and skills that are required to take you to your next stage in your career whilst developing the attributes for the workplace and employment.

In the classroom is where you will develop your bricklaying knowledge to support your practical skills development in the workshop to ensure you have developed the full range of skills and knowledge on your way to becoming a bricklayer.

Course content

The qualification is unitised and has an assessment on the completion of each unit. When all six units of training have been completed and assessed individually, you will have successfully completed the course.

This qualification covers the following practical skills and knowledge training in:

  • Health and safety
  • Construct concrete block walls for retaining walls and internal cavity walls
  • Constructing different types of brick walls including the various bonds used in the industry
  • Cavity walling construction
  • Setting out a small building

You will be assessed on each of the six units on the classroom theory knowledge you have developed. You will also be assessed on your skills development on the four practical skills tests for cavity walls, brick walls, blockwork walls and setting out. You will not be assessed until you have successfully completed the required training leading up to an assessment.

  • Basic Stationery for the classroom activities.
  • There are five points of Personal protective equipment (PPE) required in the workshop at all times. Each student is expected to provide their own safety boots and the department will provide the other four pieces:
    Hi-viz vest
    Hard hat
    Eye safety
    Gloves

Upon completion, you could progress onto the Level 2 Bricklaying Diploma.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

We have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
