Course overview

Discover the Level 2 Barbering course at Barnsley College. Get hands-on experience with modern tools and learn from experienced staff. Gain skills in health and safety, client consultation, shampooing, cutting hair and facial hair, styling, and colouring. Benefit from industry connections for placements in top salons. Develop your technical skills and knowledge to become a proficient barber.

The qualification is completed and achieved through practical, coursework and on-line exams. Practical assessment is continual throughout the year, you would practice on head blocks first then need to bring in clients to be assessed. Each assessment that is passed is logged into a portfolio of evidence and once all assessments and theory tests are passed, logged into portfolio and signed by both assessor and candidate then the qualification is achieved.

You will need to buy a barbering kit, costing £354.42, and a uniform. There will be a choice of either a black tunic and black leggings/black trousers (costing £37) or a black polo t-shirt with barbering emblem (costing £10-£12) and black trousers, black flat full shoes to be worn. Trousers and black shoes to be purchased separately, leggings provided with tunic.

There is financial support for students depending on their parents total income, if applicable then you would need apply to Student Services for Learner Support Funding (LSF) funding and if granted, this would pay for the kit and uniform.

You could progress onto the Level 3 Barbering or employment in a barber shop or salon.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.

If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
