Agriculture Level 3 Full-time

Entry requirements

  • Completed and hold a Level 2 Agriculture qualification.
  • Hold five GCSE at grade 4 or above in English, Maths and Science.

Level 3 Work-based Agriculture Diploma, validated by City & Guilds.

Course overview

Do you want to work with livestock and make a difference to their lives? 

This course allows you to gain the practical skills and knowledge that are important for working with farm animals specifically cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and poultry.

This course is perfect if you have completed and hold a Level 2 Agriculture qualification and want to further your knowledge and skills to work within the agricultural industry. These roles may include farm worker or manager, agronomist and feed nutritionist.

The course is based at Wigfield Farm, our very own working farm and visitor attraction based in Worsbrough, Barnsley. You will be taught by our experienced team of agriculture teachers, some of which have their own farms and years of experience managing poultry, cattle, sheep and goats.

Course content

You will study this Level 3 course at the Wigfield Farm campus, with occasional off-site days for visits to locations, such as dairy farms and auction houses.

The units of study include:

  • Health and safety
  • Preparation of tractors and attachments
  • Prepare animals for breeding
  • Prepare equipment for machines
  • Prepare and monitor the milking of livestock
  • Monitor the brooding of young birds
  • Promote responsible public use of the environment
  • Commutation in the workplace
  • Maintain and store records
  • Identify and monitor the healthy growth of crops
  • Establish conditions for livestock

The course is assessed by coursework and practical assessments with a final year assessment covering all areas of the courses.

Most assessments will be a mixture of written coursework with elements of practical assessment.

You will need waterproof coat and trousers, overalls, and steel toe capped boots or wellies.

You will also need to bring either a notepad and pen or a laptop.

All other PPE you may need will be provided.

After completing, you could progress onto a university-level course, apply for an apprenticeship or secure employment in the farming and agriculture industry.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
