What is Think Low Carbon?

Barnsley College established the Think Low Carbon Centre in response to Government and EU legislation aimed at cutting CO2 emissions and the projected growth within the environmental industries sector. Think Low Carbon:

  • Promotes the technology and methods used to make buildings energy-efficient and able to generate power through exemplars and demonstrators.
  • Delivers training to meet future demand for low carbon skills and knowledge
  • Seeks to reduce the environmental impact of the wider college estate

The Think Low Carbon Centre

The £4.2m Think Low Carbon Centre, based on our Honeywell campus, is a Sustainable Centre of Excellence designed to facilitate research, development and knowledge transfer for environmental technologies.

The centre features solar panels, a green roof covered in wild flowers, triple glazing, a wood-pellet powered biomass boiler and reflective sun pipes which allow natural daylight into darker rooms. Rainwater is recycled and used for flushing toilets. This innovative centre is a comprehensive resource for anyone wanting to see how low carbon buildings look and work.

Tutors, lecturers and students have access to one of the most technologically advanced learning centres in the world, where students will gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience of low carbon construction and environmentally sustainable principles and practice. This includes gaining experience in the application and use of a wide range of renewable energy technologies including solar photovoltaics (PV), solar thermal, wind, biomass, ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps, water retention and recycling, in addition to green roof technologies.

*The project attracted a £2.75m investment from the European Regional Development Fund. This was through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007-2013, with the remainder of the project funded by the College.

Think Low Carbon Training

Think Low Carbon is a key strategy behind the creation of the centre and to provide quality technical training in the emerging and growing environmental technologies arena.

Through Barnsley College’s Construction department, we deliver renewable energy training for installers, Green Deal training and environmental courses for workforce development. The Think Low Carbon Centre is a comprehensive resource adding value to all college learning, but in particular those courses which relate to the built environment and sustainability.
