Barnsley College appoints Deputy CEO

Barnsley College has announced the appointment of a Deputy Chief Executive Officer, as it welcomes a new chapter after making changes to its executive team.

The College’s Vice Principal of Technical and Professional Education, Gavin Batty, has been successfully appointed to the position of Deputy CEO and will take up the role from September.

“Born and raised within Barnsley and as a former student of the College, I am a passionate advocate for our town and will continue to make sure Barnsley College sits at the heart of our fabulous community and serves it with distinction.”

Gavin has worked in the education sector for more than 20 years, spending 17 of those cumulatively at Barnsley College. Initially joining as a Lecturer, he worked his way up to become a Head of Department and most recently, Vice Principal.

In his current role, Gavin drives innovation and development across technical and professional education, ensuring high-quality education and training opportunities are widely available both in Barnsley and across the South Yorkshire region.

Lorraine Hall, currently Quality Director at Lifetime Training, will also join Barnsley College in October as Vice Principal, Quality. She brings a wealth of experience gained through senior roles and more than two decades working with quality and Apprenticeship teams at colleges and national training providers.

Former Deputy Principal, David Akeroyd, took up his new position as Principal and Chief Executive on Tuesday 1 August, which will see him build on the College’s Ofsted Outstanding judgement and the quality of teaching and learning that has seen it become a sector trailblazer.

David Akeroyd, Principal and Chief Executive of Barnsley College, said: “I am delighted to have appointed both Gavin and Lorraine to our Executive team.

“I have been privileged to work alongside Gavin since joining Barnsley College in 2020 and have seen first-hand the impact his leadership and direction has had on our College, the curriculum and the development of our T Level and wider technical offer.

“This is a pivotal time for the College, and I have no doubt that he and Lorraine will help to drive it forward as we go through a period of evolution in pursuit of providing more of the sector leading opportunities our students and young people truly deserve.”

Speaking of his new appointment, Gavin Batty, now Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Barnsley College, said: “Born and raised within Barnsley and as a former student of the College, I am a passionate advocate for our town and will continue to make sure Barnsley College sits at the heart of our fabulous community and serves it with distinction.

“As we continue to develop and evolve the College and our curriculum, I will strive to ensure Further and Higher Education is accessible and that our students develop the life and technical skills needed to be successful personally and professionally.

“From the implementation of T Levels through to the establishment of a new Institute of Technology, it is an exciting time to be in the Further Education sector and leading the College in this new role.”

Simon Perryman, Chair of Governors at Barnsley College, added: “I am delighted, on behalf of the board to share the news of our new appointments to the College executive team.

“We are confident that these appointments will support David as he leads the College in its next chapter, providing an exceptional education for people in Barnsley and the wider South Yorkshire region.”
