Our Catering and Hospitality students and staff joined forces with the local community and church groups to feed the homeless at St George’s Church Hall in Barnsley. The students prepared and served dinner for those in need.
They spent the day preparing a menu of chicken, leek and mushroom pie with mash and veg, along with a dessert of apple and pear crumble with custard. The students also made a tomato soup to be taken away after the meal.
The success of this initiative was made possible through the support of Jamie Ashpole, Director of JJA Pack Foods, and Peter Mulrooney from Barnsley Churches Drop-in Project and the dedicated volunteers from St George’s and St Mary’s Church.
The event was not just about providing a meal; it was about creating an environment of dignity and respect for the homeless community. Each guest was treated with kindness and consideration, reinforcing the message that they are valued members of the community.
Level 3 Professional Cookery Diploma student Chantelle Chitando said: “I did this because it’s the festive season and everyone deserves to feel appreciated and cared for so cooking food for them was just a way to show them that there are people that care about them and seeing their smiles after receiving the food was the best part of it.”
Level 3 Professional Cookery Diploma student Taliah Hickie added: “I decided to volunteer because I thought it would be nice to help the community, especially those less fortunate in Barnsley.
“Many expressed their thanks in person, it was clear that the warm meals had a real impact, showing the homeless community that there are people who care.”
