Abigail Bates joined the College at 28 in February 2023, starting with Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths before advancing to Level 3 Access to Higher Education (HE) in Health and Social Care Professions.

We chatted with her about her experiences at the College and how the Access to HE course has set her up for success in the Social Worker Degree Apprenticeship. Read on to discover Abigail’s journey and insights!

Why did you choose to study the Access to HE course?

I became a mother at a really young age and dedicated much of my life to raising my children, which has truly been the best experience for me. Now that they are growing up and becoming more independent, I feel it’s time to pursue my own passions. My life experiences have inspired me to enter the field of social work. I initially came to College to improve my English and maths skills and discovered the Access to HE course while enquiring about those subjects.

What did you most enjoy about your course?

I truly enjoyed the entire course, especially psychology, although it was challenging and demanded my full attention. The standout aspect for me was the support from both tutors, Viv and Vicky, who were absolutely amazing. Their guidance was exceptional, and I am incredibly grateful to them both. When my confidence and self-belief were lacking, they helped me grow and encouraged me to believe in myself.

Did you face any challenges in your course?

For me, managing Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths alongside my studies was challenging, but I persevered and ultimately succeeded. Returning to education was tough because I lacked confidence and didn’t believe I could be academic or complete the course. However, I proved to myself that I could, and if I can do it, then anyone can.

How did College help you prepare for the Social Worker Degree Apprenticeship?

The course academically prepared me and equipped me with the skills and abilities needed for a profession. Studying psychology was particularly relevant to my interest in social work, as it involved learning various theories and concepts. Overall, the course provided me with a solid foundation for higher education.
