Our first cohort of Level 5 Learning and Skills Teacher Higher Apprenticeship students are celebrating exceptional results.
The two-year apprenticeship was introduced in 2020, designed for individuals who have a qualification in a vocational or subject specialism and wish to train as a teacher.
Our apprentices completed their qualification at the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, where they developed their knowledge, skills and behaviours to allow them to effectively educate and train within engineering.
“I started my apprenticeship with Barnsley College at the age of 52 having only been in the education sector for one month. It fills me with immense pride knowing that at my age, I achieved a distinction – something I would never have previously considered!
At the end of their apprenticeship, each apprentice completed their Gateway for End-point assessment and graduated with a distinction, the highest grade achievable.
Two of the apprentices, who completed their courses in June 2022, shared how positive their apprenticeship experience has been.
Darren Laycock, who is now an Engineering Trainer at University of Sheffield, said: “I started my apprenticeship with Barnsley College at the age of 52 having only been in the education sector for one month.
“It fills me with immense pride knowing that at my age, with great tutors supporting me, I achieved a distinction – something I would never have previously considered!”
Richard North, who is now also an Engineering Trainer at University of Sheffield, added: “The apprenticeship was challenging but ultimately very rewarding. As a dual professional teacher, it has given me an in-depth insight into the teaching theories that I use daily.
“I am incredibly proud to have achieved a distinction and I couldn’t have done it without the help and guidance of the tutors at College. This course has given me a real appetite to take the next steps, and last week I began a Level 6 part-time course.”
Emma Gaskell, Higher Education Pathway Leader at College, said: “The apprentices were highly engaged in their teaching and learning sessions which allowed them to plan and prepare for the apprenticeship End-point assessment.
“I am privileged to play a part in their teaching journeys and see them develop as teachers and trainers within the post-compulsory education sector.”
